'Farm To Fork' Year 2 Visit Tesco

17th November 2017

On Wednesday 15th November we nipped over to Tesco to take part in the ‘Farm to Fork: Healthy Eating’ Trail. It was such a valuable experience and we returned to school being so much more aware of those foods which are extremely good for us as well as those tasty foods which we should avoid!

We were shown different food items and had to guess how many sugar cubes we thought could be added to each food. It was shocking to realise that even tinned spaghetti has added sugar! Getting to count out the sugar cubes individually made us realise how much sugar chocolate and fizzy drinks really have.

We had our clipboards at the ready and completed a variety of different activities. We talked about which foods would have ‘added sugar’. Did you know that even Tomato Ketchup has added sugar? Afterwards, we took part in a taste test of all the foods which are good for us such as prunes, cucumber, sunflower seeds and carrot sticks! We really enjoyed the carrot sticks! This activity gave us ideas as to what we could have for our healthy snack each day.

After that we made some Museli and we had to follow an ingredients list in order to get it just perfect! Our ingredients list consisted of sultanas, porridge oats, bran flakes, sultanas and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Our final activity was going on a colourful fruit and vegetable hunt where we searched for green, yellow, purple and red fruits and vegetables. It was wonderful getting to see the wide variety of fruit and vegetables in the store!

Just before we headed back to school we were treated to an orange and a yummy pancake. We also met the boss as well as a security guard too!
