17th November 2017

Year 2 and Class A were extremely lucky to receive a visit from the RNIB on Monday 13th November. This is closely linked with our topic ‘Wonderful Me’ where we have explored each of the 5 senses. The RNIB provided us with lots of information regarding how the blind are catered for on a day to day basis.

We got to see a wide assortment of resources which are used with those who have a sight impairment. We got to use the talking clock to tell us the time and a walking cane to aid moving around. We particularly enjoyed using the ‘liquid level indicator’ which is used when making tea or pouring a drink. Another incredibly interesting device was the ‘talking colour indicator’ that is used to name the colour of clothing to make the task of getting dressed much more manageable.

The RNIB representatives showed us lots of different pictures of guide dogs and provided us with a range of interesting facts. Then we discussed strategies we could use in order to look after our eyes such as wearing sunglasses when it is sunny.

The visitors gave us a Braille Alphabet card to explore and we viewed some Braille Books.

It was a very informative and worthwhile morning and we really appreciate the RNIB taking the time to visit our school!!
